The Rabbit Hole: Dancers’ Utopia

Rachel Zhang & Lilliana Qian

It is commonly perceived that humans are spun into intricate webs of community because we are granted the power to articulate through language. We are able to vocalize, communicate, and form connections because of our shared knowledge of words and phrases.

But in this dance studio—The Rabbit Hole—peers interact by extending their bodies, letting dance communicate what remains unspoken.

Like the Wonderland Alice fell into, The Rabbit Hole is a cozy dance studio, a single room encased in a prosperous metropolis. Every weekend, pupils—ranging from 5-year-old youngsters to 18-year-old college students—gather here to engage thoroughly, connecting consciousness with their bodies and portraying through the artistry of movement.

Unlike conventional dance studios, whose teachings are technique-oriented, the Rabbit Hole resembles a utopia, an inclusive community where pupils are encouraged to dance with their hearts, seeking connection between mind and body. Each student navigates their own style of expression with unconditional positive regard, in an environment where they are fully comfortable defining their own artistic beauty rather than imitating movement forms and beauty ideals. “You cannot find a second dance studio like this in Beijing, where you could feel like you are one step closer to your own art while being so close to each other,” said Qianqian, who has danced here for 10 years.

On of the dancers, Ya, wears two different socks during the performance. She explained, “It was inspired by the contradictory sides of ‘classical’ and ‘contemporary’ dance, representing ‘restriction and freedom’ respectively.”

Qianqian, the elder one, is providing the two younger girls safety and confidence by dancing alongside them.

They are like family.

As the older duo improvises, the youngsters have fun following in their footsteps. In The Rabbit Hole, effective learning occurs through observing what’s around the classroom.
